Singapore Ballet

Singapore Ballet was founded as Singapore Dance Theatre in 1988 by Goh Soo Khim and Anthony Then. From its humble beginning as a small company with only 7 dedicated dancers, it has become a full-fledged premier ballet company, comprising 38 company dancers and apprentices.

Under the leadership of Janek Schergen, the company’s artistic director since 2008, Singapore Ballet performs six seasons annually: two full-length classical ballets; a widely popular outdoor dance event called Ballet Under the Stars; the Singapore Ballet Festival, which presents three works by the finest international choreographers; and a contemporary season entitled Passages. Additionally, the company also presents Made in Singapore, a choreographic platform where budding choreographers showcase their creations in an intimate setting at the company’s studio.

Today, Singapore Ballet stands as a beacon of artistic excellence, showcasing full-length classical ballets, new works by renowned international choreographers, and neoclassical masterpieces that stand the test of time. The repertoire of the company ranges from classical to contemporary ballet, from renowned choreographers like Choo-San Goh, George Balanchine, Kinsun Chan, Val Caniparoli, Edwaard Liang, Natalie Weir, Tim Rushton, Christina Chan, Ma Cong, Toru Shimazaki, and Nils Christie. In the last 15 years, Singapore Ballet produced 46 world premieres, 22 company premieres, and numerous revivals of the company’s existing choreography, some to rave reviews.

Singapore Ballet has captivated audiences in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos, Hong Kong, China, Mexico, Australia, France, United States, London, and Switzerland. It has performed in numerous international festivals and events, such as the le temps d’Aimer la Danse a Biarritz in France, Mexica’s Festival Internacional Cervantino, Chang Mu Arts Festival in Korea, and was part of the Victorian Arts Centre’s Made to Move subscription series.

Singapore Ballet has been described to be a little Asiatic gem, “The Company’s strength lies in a seamless transition between strong classical technique and contemporary movement” (Graham Watts of Ballet. Co magazine). Stephanie Burridge of Ballet Dance (UK) highlighted that “the Company is versatile, talented and disciplined… the breadth of the repertoire takes them internationally beyond Singapore’s shores, but their sensibility is undeniably Asian; underpinned by a strong local foothold and empathy.”

Singapore Ballet is a recipient of the National Arts Council’s Major Grant since 2000 and is committed to bringing the finest in dance to the public through high quality performances, dance appreciation series and ballet training programs.
