Program Notes

Robert Schumann: Manfred Overture

Robert Schumann’s father was a bookseller who made a living publishing German editions of classic English writers and poets (including Lord Byron). Young Robert thus first read Byron’s poetic drama of 1817, Manfred, as a teenager in the 1820s. His diary records the “agitated state of mind” that resulted after a “terrible night” spent reading the text, whose title character roams “the higher Alps” in a vain attempt to escape the unnamable guilt associated with the early death of his beloved, Astarte. The specifics of Manfred’s misdeed are deliberately left obscure, but Byron emphasizes the forbidden nature of their love (hinting at an incestuous liaison).

Bryce Dessner: Concerto for Two Pianos

Just before the pandemic forced live performances into a long deep-freeze, Bryce Dessner’s name seemed to be popping up everywhere: from a new staging of his theatrical collaboration Triptych (a reflection on the legacy of the controversial artist Robert Mapplethorpe) to his score for the Netflix film The Two Popes. The Concerto for Two Pianos, written for Katia and Marielle Labèque, also figures among his major recent projects. Following its premiere in April 2018 by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under John Storgårds, the concerto has already been performed multiple times and was released in 2019 on the recording El Chan (with Matthias Pintscher conducting the Orchestre de Paris).

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90

The most compact of Brahms’s four symphonies, the Third was likewise composed within a short timeframe, over the course of the summer of 1883. In contrast, the First Symphony had required a titanic struggle lasting over two decades from initial conception to completion. Brahms may have exorcised his anxiety over Beethoven’s shadow looming in the background with the First Symphony, but comparisons continued to be made by his contemporaries.
