Program Note from Ronald K. Brown

Dedication to Reggie Van Lee

Reggie Van Lee and I were introduced by a mutual friend at an event over 20 years ago. Reggie is a former ballet dancer and, at the time we met, he was Chairman of the Board of Dance Theater of Harlem. When I described the style of work we were doing with EVIDENCE, he felt it was new to him.

Years later, Reggie passed The Joyce Theater and saw my name on the marquee. He bought a ticket and saw Grace. I was happy to see him in the lobby after the show. He told me how moved he was by the music and dance in Grace. It is perfect that our Kennedy Center program includes Grace, as it is the piece that ultimately brought Reggie to EVIDENCE. Not long after he saw the work, I mentioned that we were looking to start a board and asked Reggie to chair it, which he graciously agreed to do.

Reggie went on to chair and serve as a member of the EVIDENCE board for over ten years. His leadership in the community helped to sustain EVIDENCE by growing its board and fundraising activities. Reggie helped to launch well-attended, beautifully presented annual galas and a special event in the Hamptons that made EVIDENCE “the place to be”, with Reggie’s legendary party swagger a highlight.

His friendship extends beyond board service. His belief in me as an artist has never waivered. In addition to his constant presence at EVIDENCE performances, we  have shared many important personal moments in our friendship. He is a true patron of the arts, understanding that great work requires experimentation. Reggie’s gift to so many artists and organizations is the gift of time, space, and resources to experiment.

Our newest work, The Equality of Night and Day - at which you will get a first glimpse tonight - completes the full-evening trilogy started by Grace and Mercy. Grace is a chance you receive even though you may not deserve it. I cannot say if EVIDENCE deserves Reggie Van Lee’s friendship. I can only say how changed we are by it, and how much it has meant to the company’s success, and each of us personally. The dancers and I are honored to dedicate these performances to Reggie Van Lee as a thank you for his support, encouragement, love, and contribution to us all. Thank you, Reggie.

Meet the Artists

Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, New York, EVIDENCE, A DANCE COMPANY, integrates African dance with contemporary choreography, music, and spoken word. Through its work, the company provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. Brown uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African-American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of African dance forms and rhythms. EVIDENCE tours to 30 communities in the United States annually, and has also traveled to Cuba, Brazil, England, France, Greece, Hungary, Hawaii, Ireland, Holland, Mexico, Columbia, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, and the United Kingdom to perform and teach. EVIDENCE is a dance company in demand, not only for the work presented on stage, but also for the company's dance workshops, community classes, and master classes for dancers of all ages and levels of dance experience. Annually, the company reaches an audience of more than 30,000. EVIDENCE works in partnership with the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, The Billie Holiday Theatre, and The Joyce Theater.
