Program Notes

A Letter From the Artistic Director

Dear Friends and Patrons of Opera Lafayette,

I would like to thank you and my colleagues — the artists, staff, and board of Opera Lafayette — for supporting the musical journey which I've been fortunate to undertake with the organization these last 30 years. It couldn't have happened without the support of my family as well, of course, and to them, a special hug of love and gratitude.

To the incredibly talented artists who communicate in the ineffable language of sound and movement, what a treat it has been to know you! To those who shared my interest in words, history, and context (and perhaps especially to those who do not), thank you for your indulgence.

To those who share a predilection for subtlety and humor in music, thank you for patiently working with us to bring these qualities to the fore and/or appreciating our efforts.

To our audience and especially to my fellow performers (since we are our own worst critics), an obvious truth bears repeating: perfection is not the goal. Happily, we've sought expression and discovery, and in that have succeeded beyond what I could ever have hoped.

With renewed appreciation, and best wishes to all,

Ryan Brown Signature
