Program Notes

Love in the Time of Coloratura

By Peter Russell

Today’s feast of Italian and French vocal delicacies encompasses a remarkable trajectory in music history. Throughout the 56 years between the 1827 Milan premiere of Vincenzo Bellini’s Il pirata and the 1883 Paris opening of Léo Delibes’ Lakmé, opera was an integral part of European popular culture. Yet a gradual shift in musical taste moved the emphasis away from vocal bravura for its own sake toward a more integral use of florid music as a means for storytelling and character delineation. Vocalism of supernal beauty and staggering technical prowess remained a constant, and audiences rewarded those singers who were its finest exponents with both wealth and fame to equal that of today’s biggest rock stars.
