Meet the Artists

Program Notes

Mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey and pianist Myra Huang trace a wonderful arc in tonight's Vocal Arts DC program. Starting with art song in France, they move to the heart of the lieder repertoire, and take us to a stylish cabaret to close, with gems of popular song from the music hall and Broadway.

Francis Poulenc's (1899-1963) "Trois Chansons de Federico Garcia Lorca” date from 1947) set poems by the poet and playwright that Poulenc idolized. Lorca (1989-1936), best known today for his plays "The House of Bernarda Alba" and "Blood Wedding, was a leading modernist poet as well, helping to introduce Surrealism and related movements into Spanish literature. Always attentive to trends in visual and literary art, Poulenc found inspiration in Lorca's surprising imagery and unexpected turns of phrase. His scores are marked by unexpected melodic moves, where one key seems to suddenly slide into another, only to stroll insouciantly away from the clash a few measures later—something particularly notable in the first song’s searching melody. Wry pathos is another trademark of his music, well exemplified by anguish of the third song’s lament, delivered through the surreal persona of a barren orange tree.
