Welcome Letter

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! I can’t think of a better way to start the new year than by introducing three new teams of composers and librettists to the WNO family. The works you will hear tonight were commissioned and nurtured under the auspices of WNO’s American Opera Initiative, which celebrates its 12th anniversary this year. Other companies have taken up many of the operas we have premiered as part of AOI, and more than half of the teams who gained experience through AOI have continued working together. This year, the AOI operas will be presented in NYC for the first time! We are so excited about the upcoming performance at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall on Thursday, January 23.

Notes from the Creators

Tati

Whales are the largest animals on earth. They have long captivated our species’ imagination with their massive proportions and mythic qualities. In our story, you’ll find themes that echo those of the other famous whales in Pinocchio, Moby Dick, and the story of Jonah. But our tale, Tati, updates these familiar stories of creation, power, and reluctance: Tati is both a symbol of our current environmental crises, and a metaphor for the bloated and failing political structures that have created them.

Cry, Wolf

A dispatch from the past:

Greetings to the future! We’re writing from November 9, 2024.

Two days ago, a friend showed Clare the comments on her online videos. Usually an unremarkable collection of strangers’ reactions and support, they had suddenly become an avalanche of the same simple refrain: Your body, my choice.

Mud Girl

One winter’s night during the pandemic, Christine lay awake, mind spiraling with what if what if what if catastrophizing. But then a voice cut through the panic, speaking from some other place. It said: I was a frog, a leaf, a star. And I will be again.

The next day, an image came: two women, one young and one in late middle-age, huddled under a broken bridge, cooking up frogs for dinner. From these bones, Christine began writing her novel-in-progress, River & Maude.

The Process

Bringing 20-Minute Operas to the Stage

The three operas presented this evening were created under the American Opera Initiative (AOI). The comprehensive commissioning program was founded in 2012 by Washington National Opera to stimulate, enrich, and ensure the future of contemporary American opera by providing talented composers and librettists with mentorship and opportunities to write for the stage.

The Cafritz Young Artists

These performances of new operas created under the American Opera Initiative feature casts of Cafritz Young Artists. This WNO program offers coaching, career guidance, and performance opportunities for singers and pianists/coaches on the verge of international careers. Each season Cafritz Young Artists are also spotlighted in mainstage productions.

Cafritz Young Artists graduates have gone on to successful careers including performances with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, LA Opera, The Glimmerglass Festival, Santa Fe Opera, Carnegie Hall, Bayreuth Festival, Glyndebourne Festival, Vienna State Opera, and Berlin State Opera, among others. For more on the Cafritz Young Artists, visit the WNO website at kennedycenter.org.
