Corazón Folklórico DC, Inc.

Local Washington, D.C.-based Mexican folk ballet dance company Corazón Folklórico curates a fantastic master class focused on the vigorous and intricate style of Mexican folk dance from Veracruz, el son Jarocho. The mission of Corazón Folklórico is to promote and preserve the art of Mexican folkloric dance, or ballet folklórico. Their community-based work and cultural performances have taken stage at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, The GALA Hispanic Theatre, The Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington, D.C., and various Smithsonian Museums in D.C. Most recently, on a local D.C. stage, Corazón accompanied internationally renowned mariachi ensemble the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan and legendary norteño music icons Los Tigres del Norte during their respective U.S. tours. 

La compañía local de ballet folklórico mexicano con sede en Washington, D.C., Corazón Folklórico, organiza una fantástica clase magistral centrada en el estilo vigoroso e intrincado de la danza folklórica mexicana de Veracruz, el son Jarocho. La misión de Corazón Folklórico es promover y preservar el arte de la danza folklórica mexicana o ballet folklórico. Su trabajo basado en la comunidad y sus actuaciones culturales se han presentado en el Millennium Stage del Kennedy Center, el Teatro Hispano GALA, el Instituto Cultural Mexicano de Washington DC y varios Museos del Smithsonian en DC. Más recientemente, Corazón acompañó en el escenario local de DC a un conjunto de mariachis de renombre internacional, el Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, y a los legendarios íconos de la música norteña, Los Tigres del Norte, durante sus respectivas giras por los Estados Unidos.

Founded in September 2017, Corazón Folklórico Dance Company is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to honoring and preserving the art of ballet folklórico, or traditional Mexican dance. Mexican culture is vibrant and diverse, even within the regions of Mexico. Corazón promotes and celebrates the cultural diversity of Mexico through its dance performances throughout the year and by building a community of passionate dancers from the DMV area. Corazón seeks to create a space where anyone can participate in the joy and art of ballet folklórico by offering free classes to adults held at the Spanish Education and Development Center in Petworth and at the Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington, D.C.

Honoring the legacy of Mexican culture through dance is a privilege and an important responsibility for Corazón Folklorico. We are committed to promoting the arts and celebrating cultural diversity through folklórico dance performances in the DMV Metro Area. Corazón Folklórico Dance Company offers free classes to adults who want to learn how to dance.

Mexican American dancer, instructor, and choreographer Sara Garcia dances with and serves as the company’s dance education program director. Alejandro Góngora, founder and Producing Artistic Director of Corazón Folklorico DC INC, teaches and choreographs ballet folklórico as a means to create community con corazón in D.C. His mission is to create art with people and showcase Mexico’s rich cultural diversity and history through ballet folklórico.
