Project ChArma

Ama and Chris Law are the co-founders and co-directors of Project ChArma, a dance theater collective rooted in the DMV’s vibrant movement culture. High school sweethearts turned artistic collaborators, they both hold MFAs in Dance from the University of Maryland, College Park. Ama’s training spans decades with Kankouran West African Dance Company, shaped by her parents—founding members—and furthered through an internship at Broadway Dance Center NYC. Chris draws from hip hop, roller skating, martial arts, and modern dance, crafting a unique and interdisciplinary style. Together, they use dance as a tool for activism and social dialogue.

In 2023, they co-led National Dance Day at the Kennedy Center and premiered a new work there in 2024 through the Local Dance Commissioning Project. Their international work includes presenting at the African and Diasporic Dance Traditions Conference in Salvador, Brazil, and performing internationally with Culture Shock D.C.

Project ChArma’s mission centers community, conversation, and cultural preservation through movement. As devoted teachers and students of their craft, their extensive knowledge of West African dance, martial arts, vogue, modern dance, hip hop, and self-taught urban movement uniquely allow them to guide diverse students and audience members through a fusion of different movement forms. They are alumni of Dynamic Hip Hop Dance Team and Culture Shock DC, and have showcased their work at cyphers, pop-up performances, and creative concept videos in the DMV area. They hope to continue their quest as teaching artists by providing inspiration for future generations of dancers to become fierce and community-engaged individuals.
