Local Dance Commissioning Project

Chronicles of Nina...What now?

Terrace Theater

Chronicles of Nina...What now? explores the process of living on in the wake of death and examines the longing to establish an everlasting connection with our ancestors. Just as Nina Simone harnessed funk, soul, and classical techniques, the work meshes multiple street and modern-based movement styles. Chronicles of Nina...What now? is created by the collective Project ChArma, awardee of the 2023–24 Local Dance Commissioning Project.

Program

Our 2023–2024 Local Dance Commissioning Project awardee is Project ChArma, a collective of artists promoting social change through movement. Founded by D.C. area natives Ama and Chris Law in 2017, the collective brings Chronicles of Nina...What now?, a work that explores the process of living on in the wake of death and examines the longing to establish an everlasting connection with our ancestors. Just as Nina Simone harnessed funk, soul, and classical techniques, the work meshes multiple street and modern-based movement styles as a form of release and as a bridging point for viewers to find release as well.

PLEASE NOTE: This performance contains haze and NagChampa incense smells, as well as discussion of gun violence. Performers will utilize aisles and crossover. Patrons with accessibility concerns should notify an usher at time of seating.

Born and raised in the DMV metropolitan area, Ama and Chris Law are co-founders and co-directors of Project ChArma, and have been dancing together since high school. Together, their expertise reflects the expanse of their training in a wide range of movement styles and foundations. Both Ama and Chris completed undergraduate and graduate studies from the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP), both receiving MFAs in Dance and Choreography.

The Local Dance Commissioning Project (LDCP) centers the artistic and professional advancement of the local dance community by providing resources and support to a locally based artist with the goal of serving as a stepping stone for artists to reach the next step in their artistic trajectory. Through LDCP, the Kennedy Center will support the production of the artist’s work in our venues and will work closely with the awardee to further advance that individual’s professional and artistic goals throughout the duration of the award year.
