Bryce Dessner: Mari

Efforts to break down barriers with other genres represent a significant development in classical music in recent years. For Bryce Dessner, such barriers have always seemed artificial. His prolific creative work straddles the fields of popular music, film, theater, and the concert hall. Together with his twin brother Aaron, Dessner founded the Grammy Award®–winning indie rock band The National in 1999 and serves as its co-principal songwriter, guitarist, and arranger. The Dessner brothers’ ongoing collaboration with Taylor Swift has been in the news since the mega-star announced the release of her latest album, TheTortured Poets Department. Dessner has also developed a reputation for his film scores and wrote the music for the new Apple TV+ mini-series Manhunt, a period crime thriller based on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Franz Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major

Franz Liszt essentially invented the ritual of the piano recital. He declared the instrument to be “the microcosm of music” and considered virtuosity for its own sake to be meaningless display. In an obituary essay on the death of Niccolò Paganini, for example, Liszt contrasted the “conceited and egotistical” sort of artist he took the star violinist to represent with the “artist of the future,” whom Liszt encouraged to “set his goal within, and not outside, himself, and be the means of virtuosity and not its end.”

Hector Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique

Liszt was among those in the Paris Conservatoire present for the epochal concert on December 5, 1830, that presented the world premiere of the Symphonie fantastique—only three years following Beethoven’s death and just a half a year after Paris had experienced a revolution. Overwhelmed by what he heard, Liszt became a powerful ally. His ingenious piano transcription of the work helped spread the word about Berlioz’s unique genius. Berlioz in turn collaborated with his Hungarian colleague and would later conduct the first performance of Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in Weimar (in 1855), with the composer at the keyboard.
