Program

Chitra Subramanian of chitra.MOVES intersects the movement traditions of Indian classical dance and hip hop culture to offer powerful and electrifying dance works for all ages.

Rooted in themes of relationships, community, and the power of institution, chitra.MOVES utilizes immersive storytelling and multidisciplinary elements to create meaningful connection and transformation within her audiences.

This performance is a full-bodied dance work that explores how we activate our ecosystems of care in times of turbulence and transformation. This work explores how grief can open new pathways to connection—how care is passed between generations, how communities step in to protect each other, and how we find strength in shared rhythms and stories.

Blending movement foundations from Bharatanatyam and hip hop, the piece honors tradition and innovation, memory and presence, inviting audiences to reflect on their own circles of care and how to activate and sustain them.

Created to foster new dance works by local artists and to present these artists to the widest possible audience, the annual Local Dance Commissioning Project provides funds and support for each artist to choreograph and premiere a new work.

Pre-show Activations

Join us before the show for all-ages pre-show activations! Bring your family and friends to dive into hands-on experiences inspired by our village themes — create your own “village” tree, shout out your community on our board, learn the movement gestures you’ll see on stage, and more! These activities are led by local children’s illustrator DeAndra Hodge and community organizer, Kush Karrod. Don't miss this!
