* “Suffer No More” was created by Daniel Crawford, a producer, musician, and composer based in Los Angeles. I first discovered the song a little over a year ago through Rhome Anderson—a longtime DJ, musician, and pillar of the DMV hip hop scene—who included it on a Spotify playlist honoring the transition of the beloved Risikat “Kat” Okedeyi, whom we lost too soon last year. For decades, Kat poured her heart into DC’s arts and culture through her curation, artistry, and boundless creative energy. This song immediately spoke to me, and over the past year we’ve integrated it as a part of our process. Over time, it became clear that it had a place in this work—lifting up the essence of “village” and the ongoing journey of finding our people, our place, our purpose, and, ultimately, a sense of nurturing, inspiration, and safety.

Company Statement

Chitra Subramanian is an Indian American dancer, choreographer, and educator based in Washington, DC. A Pittsburgh native and originally from South India, she teaches, choreographs, and performs with her collective, chitra.MOVES. Her aesthetic draws from Hip Hop and Indian classical and folk foundations to tell stories, elevate artists, and meaningfully engage unseen and new audiences.

Chitra fell in love with Hip Hop in the club scenes of Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. Spaces like the Shadow Lounge and Reunion Thursdays weren’t just places to dance—they were spaces where she learned about her city, forged lifelong friendships, and discovered her purpose and creative voice. These experiences deeply shaped her path, leading her to youth work and anchoring her commitment to community.

Meet the Artists

Artist Note

When I moved to DC in 2002, two things grounded me here: the local Hip Hop scene and my work with young people and their families. I met my husband, James, while dancing every Thursday night at Reunion Thursdays in Adams Morgan — I didn’t miss a single Thursday for over two years! Around that same time, James was working at FLY, a youth organization in SE, and I had just landed my first full-time job after graduate school at a local after-school program called M.O.M.I.E’s.

Dramaturg Note

What I find most compelling about the work of my dear friend Chitra Subramanian and her company, chitra.MOVES, is that the ethos of relationship and community building is embodied in every phase of the process. This piece, like the two others in the trio before it (TEMPLE and LINKED), not only reflects stories about our “village,” it enacts village.Village Stories does so in distinct ways before, during, and after what is usually thought of as the “performance.”

Special Thanks

Special thanks to my dancers who are kind, joyful, talented, vibrant and generous: Yasseen, Tenesha, Malik, Janae, Sarah, and Ivy. Thank you for always giving me space to be expansive, wild, experimental, groovy, and all of the things! Yasseen - always deeply appreciate our training sessions that inspire so many ideas in the studio and in our pieces together!! Tenesha - thank you for sticking by me for the last several years and being the most honest sounding board and such a dear friend and source of comfort.
