Viano Quartet rose to international acclaim after being awarded first prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition. One of the most sought-after young performing ensembles today, the quartet tells unique, empowering stories with a charismatic, fiery approach. Praised for its “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe), the ensemble is joined by Anthony McGill. Principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic—and the first African American principal player in the organization’s history—McGill has established a dynamic solo and chamber music career.

Note from the Artists

Viano Quartet

“We are so delighted to share this program, which highlights the extraordinary range of expression and versatility of chamber music. Haydn’s Op. 76, No. 5 is a joy to play, from its lively outer movements to the deeply moving Largo. In stark contrast, Shostakovich’s Ninth String Quartet is a profound exploration of resilience and vulnerability, with moments of fiery virtuosic intensity. Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet brings everything together with its warmth, intimacy, and sublime beauty. These three works, all written late into each composer’s life, reflect the culmination of their artistic journey, showcasing both mastery and deeply personal expression.”
