Meet the Creative Team
Deborah Wicks La Puma (Music Dramaturg)
Composer and music director Deborah Wicks La Puma is one of the most produced Theatre for Young Audiences artists working today. Popular titles include Ella Enchanted (based on the book by Gail Carson Levine), with Karen Zacarías, She Persisted (based on the book by Chelsea Clinton) with Adam Tobin, and Elephant and Piggie's We Are in a Play and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus: The Musical with bestselling children's author Mo Willems. With Willems, she also created two family programs for the small screen: Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Underground Rock Experience (HBOmax) and the upcoming animated series Unlimited Squirrels. She has music directed at theatres across the country, including the Guthrie, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, South Coast Repertory, La Jolla Playhouse, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Honors include an Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Family Musical, two Parents' Choice Awards, and a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical Adaptation. Matthew Hua (Orchestrator for Brindisi)
Matthew Hua is a Virginia-based hard-of-hearing violinist, composer, and orchestrator. He is returning to the Kennedy Center on the heels of his work as music assistant in the world-premiere of the musical The Mortification of Fovea Munson written by Mary Winn Heider, music and lyrics by Justin Huertas, and orchestrated and arranged by Steven Tran. When he’s not working on upcoming projects, Hua is rehearsing for the Northern Virginia Community Orchestra (NVCO), directed by Stephen Shook, and working at the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts. He received his bachelor of arts in American Musical Culture from Georgetown University studying under Carlos Simon and Angel Gil-Ordóñez. In 2021, Hua was invited to compose music for members of the Georgetown University Orchestra. His next original work is Soar, a full-orchestra composition with a debut performance by NVCO on May 24, 2023. Follow him on Instagram (@matthew_hua_music) for a sneak peak on his projects. William K. D’Eugenio (Lighting Designer)
William K. D'Eugenio is a lighting and sound designer based out of Washington, D.C. Recent regional lighting credits include: Cinderella (Imagination Stage); The Events, Mnemonic, Still Life with Rocket, Word Becomes Flesh [2017 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lighting Design] (Theater Alliance); Long Way Down, August Greene, Alan Cumming: Legal Immigrant (The Kennedy Center); Nat Turner in Jerusalem, Love and Information (Forum Theatre); Lela & Co (Factory 449); and The Glass Menagerie (assoc. LD, Ford's Theatre). His work as sound designer and composer has been heard for: True West, The Other Place, Antigone Project, and Circle Mirror Transformation (Rep Stage) among others.
David Arevalo (Costume Designer, Don't Let the Pigeon Sing Up Late!)
David Arevalo is a Texas born, Mexican, costume maker, designer, educator, and artist. His work straddles the intersections of embodied and cultural knowledge, classical and contemporary techniques of garment making and visual storytelling via material sculpture. Through these practices, he is compelled to showcase the experiences of communities that have found themselves underserved by the American artistic canon. The transformation and elevation of ideas, objects and expectations is central to his practice. He has worked as a draper/tailor at the Santa Fe Opera for five summer seasons, for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Fulton Theatre and Merrimack Repertory Theatre, among others. He has taught courses in costume technology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and created innovative new undergraduate coursework in design and material storytelling at Northwestern University. His costuming work was featured in Unbuttoned: The Art and Artists of Theatrical Costume Design, and his artistic work, a material storytelling sculpture titled Raza Cósmica, was featured in American Theatre magazine. He is a first generation college graduate from San Antonio, Texas, with a B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin and an M.F.A. in Stage Design from Northwestern University.
