Welcome Letter from Francesca Zambello

Dear Friends of the WNO:

A special welcome to this unique evening.

The opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was celebrated with a new work by Leonard Bernstein, a composer who personified American creativity and audacity. Bernstein’s Mass offered a glimpse of what the Kennedy Center—our living monument—would become. The great multi-media pageant is a mash-up of the sacred and the secular, a confession of faith and doubt, a musical tapestry that weaves together an astonishing number of influences.

Warm regards,

Celebrating the Past to Awaken the Future

The origins of the word “monument” suggest a structure whose purpose is not only to remind, but also to advise and even warn. The four short works that make up Written in Stone—like the monuments that inspire them—are at once celebration and challenge. “In this time of reckoning and uncertainty,” says Francesca Zambello, Artistic Director of Washington National Opera, “I feel it is appropriate that we sing the stories of the iconic structures that celebrate our history, mourn our losses, and contribute to the complex narrative of our American story.”
