Welcome Letter
Happy New Year! I can’t think of a better way to start the new year than by introducing three new teams of composers and librettists to the WNO family. The works you will hear tonight were commissioned and nurtured under the auspices of WNO’s American Opera Initiative, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year. Many of the operas we have premiered as part of AOI have been taken up by other companies, and more than half of the teams who gained experience through AOI have continued working together.
Sincerely,

Francesca Zambello
Artistic Director of WNO

Background
A Way Forward
A Way Forward invites the audience into the complexities of a Mexican family spanning three generations. The opera is centered around their family business, Panadería Gabriel, which represents the family’s livelihood, heritage, and shared history. Over the years, this traditional bakery has developed into a symbol of cultural continuity and familial ties.
—Laura Jobin-Acosta, composer, and José G. Alba Rodríguez, librettist
Forever
When we first began discussing possible stories for this project, one of the proposals on the table was a plot in which the characters are not literal humans, but rather objects.
—Elizabeth Gartman, composer, and Melisa Tien, librettist
Hairpiece
Ask any wigmaker, they’ll tell you there’s no typical client. Or rather, there are many, all wildly different. One day, you’ll get an Orthodox Jewish woman wanting a sheitel. The next, it’ll be a balding man, a chemo patient, a drag queen.
—Joy Redmond, composer, and Sam Norman, librettist
Program Notes
Bringing 20-Minute Operas to the Stage
The three operas presented this evening were created under the American Opera Initiative (AOI). The comprehensive commissioning program was founded in 2012 by Washington National Opera to stimulate, enrich, and ensure the future of contemporary American opera by providing talented emerging composers and librettists with mentorship and opportunities to write for the stage.
Spotlight on Cafritz Young Artists
These performances of new operas created under the American Opera Initiative feature casts of Cafritz Young Artists. This WNO program offers coaching, career guidance, and performance opportunities for singers and pianists/coaches on the verge of international careers. Each season Cafritz Young Artists are also spotlighted in mainstage productions.

Channeling Offenbach
Jacques Offenbach’s La Périchole, or Songbird, is about a couple of down-on-their-luck street performers in Lima, Peru, during a period of city-wide celebration (the fictional Viceroy’s birthday). Its score is full of boleros and seguidillas sung in French. It’s a contrived situation that would stretches one’s imagination under normal circumstance—unless when set in New Orleans at Mardi Gras, as is Washington National Opera’s production, Songbird, reconceived by Eric Sean Fogel, James Lowe, and Kelley Rourke. The Spanish and French influences are still palpable in The Big Easy, where joie de vivre, so important in any Offenbach performance, is crucial. Offenbach’s dialogue-heavy operetta often can only be appreciated in the vernacular of the audience. When set in New Orleans, the production’s fluid transition between English and French makes perfect sense. And when characters burst into song, as one does in opera, where else does it feel more natural than in New Orleans?
