Welcome Letter

Dear Friends and Families,

Welcome to our world premiere of the expanded version of Jungle Book! More than two decades ago, I began commissioning works for young people—not just young people in the audience, but young people on the stage. Here at WNO we program them as “holiday operas” because the end-of-year school vacations offer an opportunity for families to spend time together. And what better family outing than a night at the opera?

We want the kids’ first encounter with opera to make an impression, so we make sure they are working with artists at the top of their game. They rehearse and perform alongside members of our acclaimed Cafritz Young Artists Program and members of the WNO Orchestra. The creative team—the director, designers, conductor—are all WNO veterans. Kids also interact with other members of WNO staff, including our ace stage crew. Placing young performers in this hothouse situation makes them grow and flourish beautifully.

Synopsis

It is dusk in the forest. Raksha, the wolf matriarch, leads the cubs in song (“The Power of the Pack”). A roar interrupts, and the wolves begin to sing of the mean, loner tiger (“Sh-Sh-Shere Khan”) who stalks the jungle. Mowgli, fleeing Shere Khan, runs in and hides, seen by only Little Brother. Shere Khan enters moments later, demanding information about the human cub and threatening the pack (“Law…A Cat Like Me”). The pack faces Shere Khan down; when they present a united front, no foe is a match for them, and the tiger slinks away.

Little Brother brings Mowgli to the attention of the pack, who inspect her, noting how different she is from them (“Little Frog”). Mowgli tells the story of how Shere Khan surprised her in the forest and her mother bravely sacrificed herself (“I was playing at the edge of the village”).

Note

Rudyard Kipling was born in Mumbai (then called Bombay) in 1865; earlier that year, his parents had relocated from England so his father could accept a position in the newly founded Sir J.J. School of Art there. When Rudyard was six, he was sent back to England for schooling, but he returned to India as a young man to rejoin his family and begin a career as a journalist. He also began publishing poetry and short stories, and he quickly gained a popular following.

In 1892, Kipling moved to Brattleboro, Vermont, but the country of his birth retained a tight hold on his imagination. In Vermont, he began writing a series of short stories set in the jungle around Seoni, a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. These stories would eventually be collected as two volumes of The Jungle Book (1894–95).

Partner

Taal Academy of Dance + WNO

Washington National Opera’s contemporary production of Jungle Book features South Asian musical influences, brought to life by D.C.’s own Taal Academy of Dance. The word “Taal” means “rhythm” in Hindi and represents the essence of the Taal Academy. Under the direction of Founder and Executive Director Shuchi Buch, dancers learn Bollywood—a vibrant, colorful dance style and an integral part of Indian cinema—and classical Bharatnatyam, a traditional style of dance that originated in the Hindu temples.

Story in Motion

Some of the dance steps and hand gestures in Jungle Book come from Bharatanatyam dance. Six young Taal Academy dancers ages 8-14 and two adults will perform. Shuchi Buch describes what you will see:

Bharatanatyam, from the state of Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest Indian dance forms. It is characterized by a fixed upper torso, bent legs, intricate footwork, and hand gestures (mudras) that convey emotions and stories. Bharatanatyam is traditionally performed in the temples.
